Microtubule cytoskeleton: No longer an also Ran

چکیده
The Ran GTPase cycle has been extensively studied in the context of nuclear transport. Recent work indicates that this GTPase cycle also plays an important role in regulating the microtubule cytoskeleton.

The Fission Yeast Ran Gtpase Is Required for Microtubule Integrity
The microtubule cytoskeleton plays a pivotal role in cytoplasmic organization, cell division, and the correct transmission of genetic information. In a screen designed to identify fission yeast genes required for chromosome segregation, we identified a strain that carries a point mutation in the SpRan GTPase. Ran is an evolutionarily conserved eukaryotic GTPase that directly participates in nuc...
متن کاملMitotic spindle morphogenesis: Ran on the microtubule cytoskeleton and beyond.
Assembly and disassembly of the mitotic spindle are essential for both chromosome segregation and cell division. The small G-protein Ran has emerged as an important regulator of spindle assembly. In this review, we look at the role of Ran in different aspects of spindle assembly, including its effects on microtubule assembly dynamics and microtubule organization. In addition, we examine the pos...
متن کاملRan Localizes around the Microtubule Spindle In Vivo during Mitosis in Drosophila Embryos
The GTPase Ran regulates multiple cellular functions throughout the cell cycle, including nucleocytoplasmic transport, nuclear membrane assembly, and spindle assembly. Ran mediates spindle assembly by affecting multiple spindle assembly pathways: microtubule dynamics, microtubule motor activity, and spindle pole assembly. Ran is predicted to facilitate spindle assembly by remaining in the GTP-b...
متن کاملThe nuclear rim protein Amo1 is required for proper microtubule cytoskeleton organisation in fission yeast.
Microtubules have a central role in cell division and cell polarity in eukaryotic cells. The fission yeast is a useful organism for studying microtubule regulation owing to the highly organised nature of its microtubular arrays. To better understand microtubule dynamics and organisation we carried out a screen that identified over 30 genes whose overexpression resulted in microtubule cytoskelet...
متن کاملImmunocytochemical Study on Microtubule Reorganization in HL-60 Leukemia Cells Undergoing Apoptosis
Background: Microtubules (MT) are important components of cell cytoskeleton and play key roles in cell motility mitosis and meiosis. They are also the targets of several anticancer agents which indicating their importance in maintaining cell viability. Microtubular reorganization contributing to apoptotic morphology occurs in normal and neoplastic cells undergoing apoptosis induced by cytotoxic...
